I was in Brussels for a quick, fun getaway with my two cousins this weekend (blog post about the whole weekend coming soon). The Dominican hotel in Brussels very kindly offered us the chance to stay in an Executive room as their guests on Saturday 14 September. Here’s my A-Z review of the experience.
Amazing. My one word review: amazing. If you decide not to read the rest of this blog post, that’s okay – you now know everything you need to know about The Dominican.
Bean bag. Slump into the large bean bag-style seating in a quiet corner of the courtyard, which has good music playing while you chill/chat/eat/smoke/relax. A great private outdoor area where you can enjoy the weather and avoid the crowds of tourists just a few minutes away.
Comfortable. The bed. Aaah, the bed. As you would expect of a hotel of this standard, the bed was perfect for a good night’s sleep. So comfortable.
Design throughout the hotel was exquisite (never thought I’d ever use that word, but it just fits). You can see the theme in the pictures. Luxurious and classy but not OTT or flashy.
Efficient check in and check out service.
Gregorian chanting plays throughout the hotel – lifts, toilets, etc. It’s really calming and works well with the deco and moody lighting. Very relaxing. Nice ambience. I have to admit that it did freak me out a bit when I was wandering around the hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning with no-one else around.
Helpful staff. Again, as expected in a place like this, but they really were very approachable and friendly.
Ideal location. The hotel is a few minutes’ walk from Grand Place and about five minutes more from the royal palace (which is another must see – you’re so close it would be crazy not to). Close enough to the hustle and bustle of Grand Place, but on a very nice, clean, pretty street away from the noise and crowds.
Jus. Try some of the unusual juice flavours available at breakfast – kiwi-orange, for example.
Keycard should not be kept in the same pocket as your mobile phone. It stops it working. Try not to do the same thing about three times within 24 hours…
Lovely breakfast. Great variety of excellent quality food. Continental, as you would expect.
Monk painted on the wall of the men’s toilet near the lobby. Weird but funny.
Nespresso machine in the room – great for coffee lovers, obvs. Good chillout vibes having a coffee in the room.
Opulent without being OTT.
Pieces of art.
Relax in the spa and sauna. Perfect size for three people (max.). This white seating area was much better than the deck/lounge chairs you get in most spa-type places.
Stylish and suave.
TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice 2013 Winner.
Vibe was cool, quality, refined and relaxed.
Work out in the gym. The boxing gym is very cool.
Xenodocheionology means ‘history/love/study of hotels’. Handy!
You really should experience The Dominican if you go to Brussels.
Zen. Come here to rebalance it.
