TNBT: boozeless bars

Today’s Guardian (G2) asks “Bars without booze – the next big thing?”.

Redemption, a bar in East London (London Fields), was set up by Catherine Salway who left a job at Virgin Media (nice connection!) “to pursue my own idea – something  that is disruptive and socially conscious” after struggling to find somewhere to go with a friend with a drink problem. The bar serves up mocktails, like “mock-jitos” and “coco-ritas”.

My first thought was ‘this sounds great, but how’s it different from a juice bar or café?’

Apparently, the answer is that this feels more like a proper night out. The busiest times so far are lunch and 5-7 p.m. Not quite sure how that works, but a great idea for people who don’t want to/can’t drink.

Another boozeless bar is Brink in Liverpool which opened in 2011 as a social enterprise to help recovering alcoholics.
