Ones to watch: BBC Sound of 2012

It’s that time of year again, when TNBTs and people who we’re likely to be talking about next year are featured in the media. Looking forward to The Red Pages list (out soon), but first off the mark is the Beeb with BBC Sound of 2012 list.

A longlist of 15 has been revealed, with it being whittled down to 5 in January. Previous winners include Jessie J and Adele.

Here are the ones that caught my eye:

Lianne La Havas -“22-year-old south Londoner of Greek/Jamaican parentage”. She’s got a soul/slightly jazz vibe going on.

She’s already had some great press over the last month, from being “One to watch” in the Daily Star, a “Face to watch” in The Independent and a review in the Guardian to pieces in the Burton Mail and Wigan Today.

Azealia Banks – another one who’s already had a fair bit of good press. The Daily Telegraph (she’s one of their ‘New faces’) says: “Sweet singing, deliriously foul mouthed New York electro-rap-singer Azealia Banks has topped NME’s ‘Cool List’ 2011.” Sounds fun.

She’s also appeared on The Independent’s Barometer and in that other source of all things cool, Scotland on Sunday.

Azealia Banks

I’m sure we’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more about both of these (and some of the others) in the coming months.

Here’s the full list:

  • A$AP Rocky
  • Azealia Banks
  • Dot Rotten
  • Dry The River
  • Flux Pavilion
  • Frank Ocean
  • Friends
  • Jamie N Commons
  • Lianne La Havas
  • Michael Kiwanuka
  • Niki & The Dove
  • Ren Harvieu
  • Skrillex
  • Spector
  • Stooshe
