Cool canal boats

If you’re thinking of taking a mini-break in the UK, check out yesterday’s Guardian Travel Cool Britannia special. Whodathunk Barrow-in-Furness had an innovative art scene?

One thing that really stood out was the reinvention of canal boating (is that what you call it?). After camping and caravanning, canal boating is the latest outdoor activity to benefit from a fresh lick of paint, making it more attractive to people who don’t like the idea of being in the great outdoors with basic facilities.

Would you put up with dirty, rubbish-filled brown canals, grey, depressing weather and bad smells for the chance to stay in a “boutique” place like this?

As well as a freshly baked breakfast every morning (!), you get an iPod dock, wi-fi, satellite TV, etc.

This is an On the Water boat – as well as overnight stays, you can also hire a canal for an event.

Another cool canal thing is The Floating Cinema. I don’t think it’s a new thing, but more things like it will make the whole canal scene a bit more attractive.

Here’s a recent review by Sarfraz Manzoor.
