One to watch: Rooibos tea

Alot of people have already heard of/tried rooibos tea (or redbush tea – which is quite mainstream), so nothing really that new, but there’s been a bit of buzz around it in America recently. As food trends in this country often come from the US, I thought it might be worth watching to see if there’s a second wave in the UK, under the native ‘rooibos’ name.

Since being served in the coolest Brooklyn cafes, the rooibos trend has been picked up by the Huffington Post, Slate and Esquire.

Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free tea, only grown in South Africa. It is said to be a potent antioxidant, so likely to be given ‘superfood’ status in any upcoming hype.

And it’s pronounced ‘ROY-bos‘ – the Afrikaans word for ‘red bush’.
